Lifehouse Theater held its first première of the year on Saturday, Jan. 11, with its opening of “Women Warriors,” which tells the story of seven remarkable women who did extraordinary things that changed the world. The performance is written and performed by Annette Hubbell, which is adapted from her book “Eternity Through the Rearview Mirror.”

Hubbell plays all seven women, which include Harriett Beecher Stowe, Elizabeth Fry, Mary McLeod Bethune, Amy Carmichael, Corrie ten Boom, Gladys Aylward and Sojourner Truth.

Emmy-Award winning director and former director for CBS News Sue Ann Staake sits in the directors’ chair for “Women Warriors.” Costume design is by Hubbell, Staake and Tiffany Michel. Set design is by Vincent Martinucci and Jacob Michel, with lights and sound provided by Zachary Michel and Peter Rajca.

In this reporter’s opinion Hubbell’s performance was stellar, especially the portrayal of Gladys Aylward. An interesting note on Aylward: Jo Dierdorf, a Redlands resident heard that Lifehouse Theater was doing “Women Warriors” and contacted them to loan the theater a coat owned when Aylward when she was on a speaking tour in California in the 1960s and stayed at Dierdorf’s house.

If parents are looking for a good educational outing for their children “Women Warriors” would be a good choice. In addition to Hubbell’s performance, you get to see items from each time period in the sets designed by Martinucci for each of the seven women portrayed.

“Women Warriors” continues through Sunday, Jan. 26, with performances on Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

In addition to the weekend performances, a special evening performance will be offered on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. and another performance on Friday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. will feature an interpreted presentation for the deaf.
